What makes it “Dry” is its lack of sweetness (not its lack of wetness. Initially, Canada Dry ginger ale, the best-known of its soft drinks, mixers and other products, was produced in Canada. In 1890, a chemist and pharmacist named John McLaughlin founded a soda water bottling plant in Toronto. In 1904, he created diverse flavor extracts to enhance the water. The same year, he identified the carbonated “Pale Dry Ginger Ale.” In 1907, the beverage received a patent known as “Canada Dry Ginger Ale.”
